PLINIO OKAMOTO Interview(s)

PHNX Jury Interview 2024

Why did you think it was important to join the PHNX jury this year?
I believe that being part of the PHNX jury is a unique opportunity to contribute to the recognition and celebration of outstanding creativity in the industry. The PHNX Awards are known for honoring innovative and impactful campaigns that push boundaries and inspire others. By participating as a juror, I am able to engage with cutting-edge work, gain insights into emerging trends, and collaborate with other industry experts to identify and reward excellence.
What do you think of our hybrid jury, featuring creatives but also strategists, clients and people from all corners of the industry?
I firmly believe that the hybrid composition of the PHNX jury, encompassing creatives, strategists, clients, and industry professionals from diverse backgrounds, is a remarkable strength that sets it apart. This multifaceted approach ensures a comprehensive and well-rounded evaluation of the submitted work, capturing the essence of true creative excellence from various perspectives.

As a creative professional, I understand the immense passion, talent, and dedication that goes into crafting awe-inspiring campaigns. However, successful creative work is not solely about aesthetics or artistic expression; it is equally about strategic thinking, business acumen, and a deep understanding of the target audience and market dynamics.

By including strategists and clients on the jury, PHNX ensures that the creative work is assessed not only for its visual impact and originality but also for its ability to effectively communicate brand messages, resonate with the intended audience, and ultimately drive measurable results. This holistic evaluation process recognizes that truly impactful creative work must harmonize artistic brilliance with strategic thinking and real-world business objectives.
What do you think of the idea of free entry until the shortlist stage?
The idea of offering free entry until the shortlist stage for the PHNX Awards is a commendable and inclusive approach that deserves recognition. This policy demonstrates a genuine commitment to providing equal opportunities and access to creative professionals and agencies, regardless of their financial resources or budget constraints.

In an industry where the cost of participating in prestigious award shows can often be prohibitive, especially for smaller agencies or independent creatives, the free entry until the shortlist stage removes a significant barrier to entry. It ensures that the evaluation process is not skewed in favor of those with deeper pockets, but rather focused solely on the merit and quality of the creative work itself.
How would you define the perfect PHNX Awards winner?
At its core, a truly exceptional PHNX Awards winner should exemplify groundbreaking creativity that captivates audiences and leaves an indelible mark. This creativity should manifest in bold, original concepts that challenge conventional thinking and push the boundaries of what's been done before. It should be a work that evokes emotions, sparks conversations, and inspires others to raise the bar for creative excellence.

However, creativity alone is not enough. The perfect PHNX Awards winner should also demonstrate a deep understanding of strategic objectives and a keen ability to translate creative ideas into measurable, tangible results.
What is having the biggest impact on creative trends at the moment?
In my opinion, one of the biggest factors having a profound impact on creative trends at the moment is the rapid advancement and integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies.

The creative industry is witnessing a seismic shift as AI tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated and accessible, allowing for new levels of automation, personalization, and data-driven insights. AI is redefining how we approach creative processes, from ideation and concept development to execution and optimization.
Who would you nominate as your two or three “creatives of the year”?
Feh Tarty, a Creative Director at AKQA
Juan Javier Peña Plaza, Chief Creative Officer at DAVID Miami
Hugo Veiga, Global Chief Creative Officer at AKQA, São Paulo
